Schools first aid and first aid for those working with children.

Whether you are in childcare settings that require accredited EYFS and OFSTED compliant qualifications,  other educational settings, or you are a childcare professional working as a nanny, babysitter or au pair, we offer both regulated and unregulated courses, based on your risk assessment and compliance requirements. We can work with you to tick all the boxes. Vital Life Solutions Ltd fully complies with the training and quality standards required by the HSE Regs 1981 and its supporting guidance, as well as the standard protocol issued by the Resuscitation Council UK.

Our trainers have current First Aid at Work certificates and appropriate training and assessing qualifications which meet the requirements of the Health and Safety Executive.

What is required?

As part of the risk assessment of your first aid needs, it is helpful to consider the following:

  • The size of the school/setting and age of the children: also take into account the number of adults and visitors you may have on site. Are there any medical needs to take into consideration (Diabetes, Epilepsy etc) within this group.

  • How your incident report book could inform future training and needs?

  • Whether first aid provision readily accessible for all areas of the school? This should include provision for school trips and outings, residentials and any swimming lessons etc, as well as the layout and distribution of classes and offices.

  • What additional provisions are in place when appointed persons or first aiders are ill or on leave.

  • Whether there are specific needs in particular areas of the school that require additional first aid provision? For example: sports halls, science labs and design technology subjects.

First Aiders and Appointed Persons:

  • Appointed person – The person in charge of first aid provision who looks after equipment and calls the emergency services.

  • EFAW Trained – EFAW stands for Emergency First Aid at Work, this is one day (6 hour) course

  • FAW Trained – FAW stands for First Aid at Work, this is 3 day (18 hour) course

To meet the Health and Safety Executive requirements schools (low hazard environments) with less than 25 people on site should have at least one appointed person. For 25-50 people- at least one EFAW trained staff member, and for numbers of 50 and above at least one FAW trained person for every 100 people. Note- this is the minimum legal requirement, it would be recommended to ensure that all staff have some level of training to equip them to respond effectively should an emergency arise.

"I found how interactive the course was very helpful in my ability to retain the knowledge I learnt and I would feel confident in myself in a situation that required me to use my first aid skills I gained from this course."
